About Middle River Wildlife Management Area

Middle River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in Augusta County, Virginia, encompassing approximately 1,071 acres of forest and riverine habitats along the Middle River, a tributary of the North River. The WMA is part of the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ efforts to conserve wildlife habitat and provide public access for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation. The area features a mix of mature hardwood forests, riparian zones, and open fields that create diverse ecological niches supporting abundant populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and various small game species. Visitors to the Middle River WMA enjoy rustic access to the Middle River, which is stocked with trout and supports fishing year-round. The terrain consists of moderate hills and flat river bottoms, making it accessible for hiking and nature walks though no formal developed trail system exists within the bounds. Public hunting is a key use, with controlled hunting seasons for deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game, which helps maintain a balanced ecosystem. Birdwatchers also find the WMA rewarding due to the variety of songbirds and wetland species attracted by the riparian corridor. The area is managed to balance habitat conservation with outdoor recreational opportunities by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. Although there are no developed campgrounds or visitor centers within the WMA itself, nearby towns provide lodging and amenities. The natural beauty, peaceful environment, and wildlife viewing opportunities make the Middle River Wildlife Management Area a valued outdoor destination in the Shenandoah Valley region.
